Oh the ways this movie, and then the series went wrong.

I like your list of "what were they thinking" moments. Especially:

"Why does KITT’s special nanotechnology skin stop the car from moving at all when smashed into by a truck? Last I checked, nanotech didn’t fix the laws of physics."

Here is my take on season 1 (with pics) if you are interested:

First game I played in my computer, about 15 years ago. My son was in my lap, shooting while I moved. Now he is a bonafide gamer, and it all started with Wolfestein. Good memories.

Yes, you are right about most of the aspects of video game version of Robotnik, but other incantations are much deeper in terms of character development. Refer to the "Sonic the Hedgehog" comic books by Archie Comics. The Robotnik described in those comics is a much more in depth villain. The Robotnik reperesented in the Saturday morning cartoon by DIC (also known as "SatAM" by fans) features a darker Robotnik beyond the cliche' mad scientist persona represented in the games.

To comment on Robotnik not making any sense;he doesn't have to, and there are a few reasons why. Since Sonic games are generally marketed towards children (who usually don't pay attention to anything but the fun factor), there is no requirement for character development or anything but an elementary understanding of good and evil. Sonic is good, Robotnik is evil. It does not matter if Robotnik makes dumb looking robots or makes his plans absurdly easy to foil by a certain blue hedgehog, Robotnik serves his purpose as an antagonist. Besides, too much character development leads to limitations in future work, that is why our beloved Mario is so versatile; we know nothing about him.

To go even further, who doesn't like to trash all of Robotnik's weird, interesting, and/or stupid badniks? If it weren't for all of his different robots (or remodeled remakes of old ones), the Sonic titles past and present would get very boring.

Robotnik (in this writer's opinion) is by no means a disaster, he has helped make many people wealthy and not to mention has aided in bringing fun games to our televisions. It is also not fair to put poor old Robotnik up for advanced levels of scrutiny; he is not meant to be a complex or sensible villain (hence the classification of "mad scientist"). What would Sonic be without Ro-butt-nik tussle with? Simply put, he would be just a hedgehog.

It takes quite a bit of courage to throw criticism at one of the most well known (and dare I say popular) video game villains ever, you brave soul. I enjoyed reading your article even though Dr.Robotnik is my favorite villain period. I hope that crazy scientist doesn't read this blog himself. Otherwise the next Sonic game might be quite...impossible.

By the way...am I the first to notice your little smiley face in the bottom left corner?
